Purup Island is an island in the Rumberpon District, Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia. In the geographic coordinate system, the Rumberpon District is at coordinates 1o 50' 1.665" South Latitude and 1340 10" 44.938" East Longitude. The position of Rumberpon Island is in the northern part of the Regency. Wondama Bay. It is directly adjacent to South Manokwari Regency. Purup Rumberpon Island is located in the Cenderawasih Bay National Park area. Cenderawasih Bay National Park is the largest marine national park in Indonesia, consisting of land and coast (0.9%), mainland islands (3.8%), coral reefs (5.5%), and ocean waters (89.8%). Cenderawasih Bay has a unique geological structure and very important oceanographic history. This marine national park has coral reefs area with the best quality in the world.Recorded more than 500 species of coral reefs with 14 new species.Purup Island is one of the places where the highest biodiversity has ever been recorded worldwide. There are approximately 209 species of fish living in this area, including butterflyfish, angelfish, damselfish, parrotfish, rabbitfish and anemonefish.
Types of molluscs include cowries snails (Cypraea spp.), strombidae snails (Lambis spp.), cone snails (Conus spp.), trumpet tritons (Charonia tritonis), and giant clams (Tridacna gigas).
There are four types of turtles that often land in this national park, namely the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivaceae), and the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Dugongs (Dugong dugon), blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), coconut crabs (Birgus latro), dolphins and sharks are often seen in the waters of Cendrawasih Bay National Park including on Purup Island. Several types of wild animals such as cuscus, sea eagles, king cockatoos and others are also on purup island.
Apart from that, there are several clear blue lagoons, exotic small islands, prehistoric relics in the form of rock pictures or prehistoric paintings of ambesibui, sanepa, inuri kyari and ancient human skulls in the amande niche site, and stone wreck sites around purup island. and rumberpon.
The unique geographical condition of this island captivates visitors. Beautiful coral reefs offer a variety of color sensations, small islands partially surrounded by rock and soft white sand surrounded by the clearest shallow waters. This island is uninhabited, only a stopover for local people when traveling by sea to Wasior City, Wondama Bay District or vice versa, as well as a parking lot for local fishermen. Local people only inhabit the large island of Rumberpon. There are seven villages surrounding Rumberpon Island including Kampung Yomakan, Yembekiri I, Yembekiri II, Watitindau, Iseren, Yariyari and Isenebuay.
The beauty of Purup Rumberpon Island is not only on the water. Purup is home to a small percentage of the planet's coral reefs which come with an explosion of color contributed by the soft and hard corals that make them up.
